Job Description:

Job Title: Senior Rehearsal Director Reports to: Artistic Director
Location: Calgary Type: Regular Full Time / Term Contract (46 weeks)

The Senior Rehearsal Director is an integral part of the Artistic team, supporting and guiding the development of the professional dancers. As the primary point of contact for internal and external artistic collaborators, the Senior Rehearsal Director will serve as an example of inclusive leadership and professionalism. The Senior Rehearsal Director will provide additional direction and mentorship for the other Rehearsal Directors and Artistic support staff.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
• Responsible to restage and/or remount existing or new ballets of Alberta Ballet repertoire.
• Assist the Artistic Director in restaging and remounting in new works.
• Provide indirect supervision, direction, and mentorship to other Rehearsal Directors on Artistic team.
• Supervise the dancers’ work, attendance, motivation, and well-being.
• Maintain overall artistic quality and integrity of performances.
• Along with the Artistic Director, encourage the development of dancers and their skills, assessing their achievements and areas of weaknesses.
• Teach Company class for dancers.
• Teach, rehearse, and prepare dancers for all productions and performances.
• Ensure the dancers have a thorough knowledge of the Company’s repertoire.
• Facilitate the video recording of works in progress.
• Notate choreography, including timing/counts, phrasing, musicality, casting, and artistic intention(s) of ballets in company repertoire.
• Effectively communicate original design aesthetic of works with the production team as required.
• Ensure the Artistic Activities in studio and theatre are in compliance with the current CAEA (Equity) Agreement between Alberta Ballet and CAEA.
• Assists in the selection of repertoire and artists, contributing to the individual and collective development of the Company.
• Assist with the creation and distribution of the weekly/daily rehearsal schedules, casting, and general dancer events information for the Company.
• Support the Artistic Team in adhering to the Artistic Staff Guiding Principles.
• Act as an ambassador for Alberta Ballet Company with external stakeholders as required.
• Participate in Dancer performance feedback discussions (formal and informal) as requested.
• Teach external classes and guide engagement events periodically throughout the season, including for the Alberta Ballet School.

Requirement:

REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum of 15 years combined experience as ballet performer, teacher and/ or artistic staff.
• Familiarity in Microsoft Office365 (Word, Outlook, Excel), SharePoint, Teams, iTunes, Vimeo, etc.
• Familiarity with AV equipment (sound and video).
• Ability to travel.
• Reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
• Candidates are required to complete a Police Background Check as a condition of employment.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

BENEFITS AND SCHEDULE:
• Term Contract (46 weeks per year (Mid July to end of May)
• Monday to Friday; evenings and weekends on tour and during performance weeks; 40 hours per week

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience of Ballet
• Ability to see, hear, speak, and physically demonstrate dance techniques.
• Experience and understanding of the working practices of a professional ballet company and major theatre.
• Experience working within a unionized Company.

B. Management
• Ability to promote effective teamwork, trust, and harmonious working relationships at all levels.
• Outstanding communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
• Creative and collaborative problem solver, open to change, flexible, and capable of adaptability
• Ability to manage priorities and support a busy workload.

Remuneration:

$1500 – $1600 / week
46 week contract (Mid July to end of May) annually
