Membership criteria to the Canadian Dance Assembly

For individuals:

Individual members may be dancers, choreographers, dance teachers, dance researchers and writers, designers, and dance professionals contributing to dance in a non-artistic capacity, including managers, producers, agents, arts administrators and archivists. Professionals working in all dance forms, genres and specializations are invited to become members. Individual membership rates range from $10 - $45.

For organizations:

Organizational members may be dance creation and performing companies, training institutes and educational institutions, as well as specialized dance or multidisciplinary presenting organizations and service and support organizations. Organizational rates start at $85, and are based on annual operating budgets.

Eligible organizations must be registered or incorporated non-profit organizations in Canada, and have a sustained level of activity. Additionally, dance creation and performing companies must have dance professionals who have completed their basic training as their artistic directors.

The Canadian Dance Assembly uses the Canada Council’s definition of a professional dancer which stipulates:

“Dance professionals include dancers, choreographers, dance teachers, dance writers, artistic directors, designers and accompanists, as well as professionals contributing to dance in a non-artistic capacity such as managers, producers, agents, arts administrators and archivists.”

You must also:

• have specialized training in the artistic field (not necessarily in academic institutions)
• be recognized as a professional by his or her peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition)
• be committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if possible financially
• have a history of public presentation or publication.

Supporting Individual Membership:
Dance students, community artists, non-professional dancers and dance enthusiasts may become non-voting supporting members. $10

Supporting Organizational Membership:

Other supporting organizations that do not meet the criteria above may become non-voting supporting members. $60
