A Fichu Turning

A Fichu Turning seeks to create from a signed form, a symbol, a new signifier, rather than from a recognizable code of dance training and technique. In this way I aim to advance and to challenge existing artistic practices by making dance more accessible to d/Deaf and hard of hearing people.

We are too often uninvited into dancing spaces because of the mistaken assumption that dance is music dependent. The body is always moving, always signifying and always in some act of rhythm or unrhythm. These are three unmistakable traits entangled in the essence of contemporary dance and none of them require that the moving body be a hearing body.
