A Fichu Turning

A Fichu Turn­ing seeks to cre­ate from a signed form, a sym­bol, a new sig­ni­fi­er, rather than from a rec­og­niz­able code of dance train­ing and tech­nique. In this way I aim to advance and to chal­lenge exist­ing artis­tic prac­tices by mak­ing dance more acces­si­ble to d/Deaf and hard of hear­ing peo­ple.

We are too often unin­vit­ed into danc­ing spaces because of the mis­tak­en assump­tion that dance is music depen­dent. The body is always mov­ing, always sig­ni­fy­ing and always in some act of rhythm or unrhythm. These are three unmis­tak­able traits entan­gled in the essence of con­tem­po­rary dance and none of them require that the mov­ing body be a hear­ing body.
