  • Trudeau announces rent relief of 75% for small businesses affected by coronavirus


    The federal government is providing rent relief to businesses that can’t afford to pay their landlords at a time when their operations are seriously curtailed or shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal help, expected to lower rent by 75 per cent for affected small businesses, will be provided in partnership with the provinces and territories, which have jurisdiction over rents.

    The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance for small businesses will provide forgivable loans to qualifying commercial property owners to cover 50 per cent of three monthly rent payments payable by eligible small business tenants experiencing financial hardship during April, May and June.

    The loans will be forgiven if the mortgaged property owner agrees to reduce the eligible small business tenants’ rent by at least 75 per cent for the three corresponding months under a rent forgiveness agreement, which will include a pledge not to evict the tenant while the agreement is in place.   • Feds unveil targeted COVID-19 help for energy, arts and sports sectors


    OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a new range of targeted financial measures to help the energy, arts, culture, and sports sectors particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic that has halted many aspects of Canadian life.

    Through new measures aimed at assisting these industries, the federal government says it is providing additional support for some industries that have fallen through the cracks of current financial assistance programs, with the intent of creating and maintaining jobs.

    “Over the past few weeks, the pandemic has created anxiety and uncertainty for all Canadians, but some are going through an especially tough time. COVID-19 has brought many industries to a halt, and workers across the country are struggling as a result,” Trudeau said. Read More

  • Part-time, contract and seasonal workers now qualify for COVID-19 emergency benefits


    Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced more flexible rules for claiming the Canada emergency response benefit (CERB) in response to critics who pointed out the initial rules excluded too many people, including those working reduced hours.

    Seasonal workers and those who have recently run out of employment insurance will now also be eligible for CERB. People who make less than $1,000 a month due to reduced work hours will also qualify.

    As examples, Trudeau pointed to volunteer firefighters, contractors who can pick up some shifts, or people working part-time in grocery stores.

    He also announced a wage boost for essential workers who make less than $2,500 a month, including those working in long-term care facilities for the elderly.

  • Leadership Change at the Canadian Dance Assembly / Changement à la direction de l’Assemblée canadienne de la danse

    National Council President Fannie Bellefeuille would like to recognize the extraordinary work of outgoing Executive Director Kate Cornell. Dr. Cornell has been Executive Director of the CDA for that last six years and is leaving the organization this month to join the new organization AfterMeToo as the Training Director for the Rosa Project – an initiative to address harassment in federally regulated sectors, including the arts.

    “On behalf of the membership, the CDA would like to sincerely thank Kate for her passionate advocacy, her collaborative leadership, and her exceptional vision. Kate is leaving the CDA in an improved financial position. Under Kate’s direction, the CDA began the Decolonizing Canadian Dance initiative, raised its public funding by more than 30%, and successfully advocated for more than $300 million of federal funding for the arts sector. We are grateful for Kate’s leadership.” - Fannie Bellefeuille.

    The National Council is pleased to announce that General Manager Aviva Fleising has agreed to become the CDA’s Interim Managing Director. Cornell exclaimed that, “The CDA is in extraordinarily good hands with Aviva. She is a steadfast leader with the community’s best interests at heart. Aviva is keenly aware of the needs of the dance community.” Aviva Fleising will transition into this new position on April 15th.

    With this ongoing change in staff structure, National Council will be reassessing the CDA’s strategic priorities. National Council and staff will be crafting a new strategic plan for the organization this year. Currently, the CDA is focussing on its membership - conducting regular calls with organizations and individuals. During the COVID19 pandemic with reduced staff, the CDA will prioritize community engagement.

    Fannie Bellefeuille, présidente du Conseil national, tient à saluer le travail extraordinaire de notre directrice générale sortante, Kate Cornell. Madame Cornell, PhD, est directrice générale de l’ACD depuis six ans et quittera notre organisme ce mois-ci pour se joindre à AfterMeToo, une nouvelle entité, comme directrice de la formation pour le projet Rosa, initiative conçue pour contrer le harcèlement dans les secteurs de compétence fédérale, dont les arts.

    « Au nom de tous ses membres, l’ACD tient à remercier Kate du fond du coeur pour son travail de représentation enthousiaste, son leadership collaboratif et sa vision exceptionnelle. Sous la gouverne de Kate, l’ACD a grandement amélioré sa position financière et le déficit accumulé est pratiquement éliminé. Toujours sous la direction de Kate, l’ACD a lancé l’initiative de décolonisation de la danse au Canada, a réussi à obtenir une augmentation de plus de 30 % de ses crédits publics et a contribué à procurer plus de 300 millions de dollars en subventions du fédéral pour le secteur des arts.     Par ailleurs, le Conseil national a le plaisir d’annoncer que notre gestionnaire générale, Aviva Fleising, a accepté le poste de directrice générale intérimaire de l’ACD. Madame Cornell a affirmé que « l’ACD se trouve entre d’excellentes mains avec Aviva. Elle est résolue dans son leadership et a à coeur l’intérêt premier du secteur de la danse. Et Aviva connaît à fond les besoins du monde de la danse. ». Aviva Fleising assumera son nouveau rôle le 15 avril prochain.

    Étant donné les changements en cours au niveau du personnel, le Conseil national réévaluera les priorités stratégiques de l’ACD. Le Conseil national et le personnel établiront donc un nouveau plan stratégique pour l’ACD pour l’année en cours. Présentement, l’ACD s’occupe de ses membres et tient des conférences téléphoniques régulières à l’intention des organismes et des particuliers. Pendant la pandémie de COVID-19 et la période de réduction du personnel, l’ACD accorde la priorité à la mobilisation sectorielle.

  • Artists are getting us through COVID-19. Never question their value again

    Most of the country is in lockdown, attempting to slow the spread of COVID-19. And it's led many of us to reflect not only on the current moment but also on what comes next. If there will be an "after" COVID-19, the world will be fundamentally changed. (Yes, I said "if.")

    There's a question that I've noticed coming up a lot lately: what kind of new world do we want to build? Part of the answer lies in reflecting on what we don't want to continue. I suggest that in this new iteration, we stop devaluing artists' worth.
